A Dalit woman and victim of what is commonly called love jihad reached the office of the Superintendent of Police, Mandi on September 20, demanding security from accused man Ayaz Khan alias Sonu. She alleged that Ayaz had deceitfully presented himself as an army officer named Sonu to entice her into a fraudulent romantic relationship. He then took her to Jammu & Kashmir, where he facilitated her conversion to Islam and conducted a nikah ceremony.

Afterwards, the woman managed to regain his trust and safely returned home. However, Sonu subsequently targeted her brother and has been making threats on their lives. The SP is investigating the matter and soon the accused will be arrested.

As per the reports, the victim 18-year-old Kavita eloped with accused Ayaz alias Sonu almost three months ago. Sonu used to visit their house and wanted to make Kavita his sister, due to his polite behaviour, the family never suspected any wrong.

Soon, Kavita and Sonu became good friends and then he proposed to her. He said, he works in the Indian army and loves her a lot, so they should get married to each other. The woman found his love genuine and decided to elope with him, she said, that Army men are trustworthy.

He took her to Rajouri in Jammu & Kashmir, where she sensed something is wrong, she noticed all the people from their attire and way of life were Muslims, and then she found Sonu was actually Ayaz. By the evening he had called all the clerics and other religious preachers who asked her to get converted in order to marry him. They also threatened her saying, if refused to do so, they will burn her alive.

The victim was reluctant and hence was kept locked in a room for straight three days.

The victim realised this was not the way to get out of his captivity so she agreed to marry him. The next day, she recited ‘Kalma’ underwent Islamic nikah and started gaining the trust of Ayaz. This went on for almost two months, and Ayaz started leaving his phone to Kavita assuming she had accepted her life.

Meanwhile, Kavita clicked the picture of Ayaz’s Adhar Card with his actual name and picture and sent it to her family. She informed them about everything and asked them to recover her.

Later, her parents lodged a missing persons report in Mandi and named Ayaz as suspect, after the FIR the police recovered Kavita from Rajouri but the accused managed to escape.

Later on when the victim returned home, Ayaz launched an attack on Kavita’s brother, he also issued death threats against the family. Then the family contacted local Hindu activists and reached the SP office.

The victim’s mother, Vimla Devi said, “The accused who is beating my son on roads, took my daughter away with a fake name and nefarious agenda is walking freely. This should not happen, I will request all other girls to stay cautious of these frauds, who are taking our daughters away in order to get them converted”.

She demanded justice for her daughter and the accused to be arrested as soon as possible.

The SP Mandi, Soumya Sambshivan said, she had received a complaint from the victim, that the accused took her to Jammu & Kashmir and converted her to have nikah. Although, she does not have nikahnama, but based on her complaint the Himachal Police is investigating the matter and the accused will soon get arrested.
