More than twenty-five leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Tayyip Erdogan, will convene at the G20 Summit on September 9-10. This marks the hosting of the summit since the grouping-initiated level meetings in response to the 2008 financial crisis. A formidable gathering of eighteen nations who are the members of the grouping will be represented at the leader’s level.

Eminent World Leaders Involved

These leaders include Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez, Australian Prime Minister Antony Albanese, Brazil’s President Luiz Da Silva, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Other important dignitaries are German Chancellor Olas Scholz, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, President of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Bin Salman, Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, US President Joe Biden, British PM Rishi Sunak, President of European Council Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen.

The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, will not attend the summit; in his place, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend the summit. Similarly, Minister of Economy Raquel Burenrostro Sanchez will lead the Mexican delegation. The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, except for the ministerial level representation.

Notably, Mexican presence has been consistent at this level, with its Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard representing the nation at the Bali Summit (G20) in 2022, the Italy G20 Summit in 2021 and the Osaka G20 Summit in 2019.

Xi Jinping’s visit to New Delhi will be followed by an informal conversation with Indian PM Narendra Modi amid the tense situation at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). His last visit to India was at the 2019 informal summit in Malappuram in Tamil Nadu.

President Joe Biden’s visit to India, from September 7 to 10, 2023, includes participation in the G20. The White House, while announcing the visit, hailed the G20 leadership and reaffirmed commitment to the premier economic cooperation.

The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s G20 presence aligns with the September 11 state visit this year. The President of Indonesia, Widodo, will arrive just after the ASEAN Summit in which PM Modi will be participating in person from September 6 to September 7, 2023, underlining India’s diplomatic engagement.

For Rishi Sunak, the PM of Britain, and Yoon Suk Yeol of Seoul, this will be their inaugural visit to Delhi since taking charge of office last year. Notably, Japanese, Australian, Italian and German leaders had earlier visited the Indian capital this year, marking their recent rendezvous with New Delhi.
