New Delhi: National Sports Day is being celebrated across the country today. Today, people are encouraged to take some time out of their day to play their favourite sport and inculcate the habit of playing sports in daily life to keep themselves fit physically and mentally.

It is celebrated as a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, known for his goal-scoring ability and superb ball control.

“Dhyan Chand… Dhyan Chand… Dhyan Chand is sprinting towards the goal… goal! Indian players erupt in celebration…” Those iconic words echoed each time Major Dhyan Chand graced the hockey field. As the sun ascends today, the global community gathers to pay tribute to the anniversary of an unparalleled sporting maestro, Major Dhyan Chand. Revered as the “Wizard of Hockey,” his legacy continues to shine in the realm of sports, kindling inspiration across generations and etching an indelible mark on the tapestry of hockey.

Born on August 29, 1905, in Allahabad, India, Dhyan Chand’s journey transcended mere athleticism; it was a metamorphosis that revitalized the very essence of field hockey. His extraordinary skills and mastery on the field not only inscribed his name in the annals of Indian sports history but also found a cherished place in the hearts of millions worldwide.

When Adolf Hitler praised Major Dhyan Chand?
During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where India won the gold medal in hockey. The Indian team was led by Dhyan Chand, who was considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He scored 14 goals in the tournament, including 8 in the final against Germany. After the match, Hitler met with the Indian team and congratulated them on their victory. He also singled out Dhyan Chand for praise, saying that he was “a great athlete and a credit to his country.” Hitler was so impressed by Dhyan Chand that he offered him a position in the German army, but Dhyan Chand declined.

Dhyan Chand’s patriotism was well-known, and he refused to play for any country other than India. He was also a staunch believer in non-violence, and he would not have wanted to associate himself with Hitler’s Nazi regime. Hitler’s praise of Dhyan Chand is a reminder of the greatness of the Indian hockey player. It is also a reminder of the dangers of nationalism and totalitarianism.

"#Dhyanchand was a true inspiration to us all," says Balbir Singh Sr., one of Dhyan Chand's teammates on the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1936 Olympics.
