Tamil Nadu: A college student stirs up controversy by calling for creation of a separate State

The public claims that the speech of a young college student named Naramada, who wished for a separate Tamil Nadu and received an award, indicates support for a divisive ideology. She elaborated on her desire for a distinct Tamil Nadu in an elocution contest, echoing the sentiments of EV Ramaswamy Naicker (Periyar).

As a part of the former chief minister M. Karunanidhi’s 100th birthday festivities, the Tamil Nadu State Minority Commission (TNSMC) organised a gathering. Separate categories for speeches in Tamil and English were included in the competition, which was held in 38 districts. The top achievers in each district received awards for Rs 20,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 5,000.

Two hundred twenty-eight pupils achieved success at the district level, while six students triumphed at the state level. To encourage college students to support the Chief Minister’s campaign slogan, “Thalai Nimirum Tamil Nadu,” or “Raising of (from social evils) Tamil Nadu,” TNSMC organised these speech competitions at government-recognized colleges throughout Tamil Nadu.

All those in attendance at the prize ceremony paid close attention to Narmada’s seditious and divisive statement, which quickly became the centre of discussion.  “I’m in my fourth year of engineering at a college in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur district,” Narmada claimed later in a media interview. She further added, “I was chosen to compete in the state-level competition after taking third place in the college-level competition hosted by the Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission, where I have  been awarded a prize.”

“I chose the topic ‘State’s Autonomy as envisaged by Karunanidhi (Kalaignar)’ because it aligns with my favourite book, which discusses state autonomy,” the college student explained why she chose the subject. The NEET exam and numerous other alleged injustices are among the problems that our state is currently battling. Education was moved to the concurrent list as a result of “Ondriya Arasu,” a separatist slang term used by Dravidian stockists to refer to the Central Government.

So, much like Periyar’s desire, my demand is for a separate Tamil nation. I’m not sure if it is possible, but I’m determined to speak up in favour of it. I chose the theme “State’s Autonomy as Envisioned by Karunanidhi” for this reason, and I am honoured to have received praise for my speech. I’m thrilled that my speech earned me an award.  Getting a prize is not unexpected and is expected.

Since its beginning, the DMK has established a special “Dravida Nadu” slogan for Tamils, and they frequently demand this in order to distract attention.

Isai, the state deputy secretary of the DMK’s IT branch, has demanded that all southern states secede and join the “United States of Dravidian Republic,” a new nation. An anonymous Twitter user suggested that the five southern states should be recognised as a separate nation on February 16, 2023, in a tweet that included a picture of the states and included the Prime Minister’s handle as a tag.  The message on the handle was “I request our honourable pm @narendramodi to declare these south states as different country they don’t deserve to stay in our beautiful country plz modiji!..” In response, DMK IT Wing Deputy Secretary Isai stated that a “United States of Dravidian Republic” is necessary.

In a video that went viral on social media earlier this month, TN DMK Public Works Minister EV Velu can be heard asking, “What is the state today? We were never affected by the word India. When did India start to affect us? I’m going to say it out loud. We weren’t affected in the same way. I’m referring to a previous time. Where did we make a difference? It had no effect. India is a region of northern India. We are Tamil Nadu residents. We have to establish a Dravida Nadu if at all possible. Our reasoning was moving in that direction.

Former Union Minister A Raja, of the 2G scam fame, made an open appeal for a distinct state demand in July last year.   He said that social reformer Periyar, whom the DMK regards as its ideological leader, campaigned for Tamil Nadu to secede from India when speaking at  a conference of the party’s local body representatives in Namakkal. Raja Said, “for the sake of India’s democracy and unity, we have so far ignored that demand. I implore the Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to refrain from pressuring us to resurrect the demand. In the presence of [our] leaders on the dais, I am telling Amit Shah and the Prime Minister with the utmost humility that our chief minister is following in the footsteps of Anna [DMK founder CN Annadurai], so please do not push us to follow in the footsteps of Periyar. I beg the Centre to give us freedom. The conflict will continue till Tamil Nadu is granted state autonomy.”   Raja added, “Don’t force us to seek a separate country; grant state autonomy, and we won’t stop fighting until then.”

The DMK founder Annadurai has given up this demand, according to journalist Ganesan. Now, DMK has been producing it not to test the waters but to perplex people’s brains. We discover that it has a thorough strategy to press for this. In light of this context, the girl’s speech pattern was nothing novel. She might have received tutoring.  It is a great strategy to get inside young people’s heads and corrupt them so they will play their damaging game. The DMK opposes the repeal of CAA, UCC, and Article 370. The divisive, fundamentalist, anti-national, and urban naxal forces currently operating in TN have strategically supported
