Guwahati: The evil of Love Jihad has been hunting many Hindu girls in Assam for years. But authorities are still not taking it seriously, which remains a matter of concern. While falling prey to love jihad, the Hindu girls didn’t realise much, but after some time, when the pressure mounts on them to convert to Islam or to eat beef or live with other wives of the Love Jihadi, the poor victims of Love Jihad break down mentally or physically.

Such a sad story of a Hindu girl from the Lakhimpur district of Assam has come to light recently. Here the Love Jihadi Gulzar Ahmed of Raunapur near Lakhimpur town, trapped a Hindu girl in 2016 with a Hindu identity. He abducted the Hindu girl and married her. But the victim girl came to know about his identity when she went to Gulzar Ahmed’s home after marriage. Not only that, the victim girl came to know that Gulzar Ahmed is already married and a father of three children.

After the exposure of his real identity, Gulzar Ahmed and his family started torturing the Hindu girl. She was forced to eat beef, and when she refused, she was physically assaulted by Gulzar Ahmed. The torture continued. Meanwhile, the Hindu girl gave birth to a boy. After the birth of the boy, the torture further increased on her. The victim explained that Gulzar Ahmed forced her to eat beef the next day of Eid. But she refused and was brutally bitten with a plastic pipe by Gulzar Ahmed. The victim went to the Khelmati outpost and lodged a complaint. But later, Gulzar Ahmed went to the police station and brought her back with a promise not to torture her in future in front of the police officials. But after reaching home, Gulzar Ahmed again started beating the victim. This time the torture went past the tolerable limit. The victim left Gulzar Ahmed’s house and is now taking shelter in her parent’s house. She said that she would never return to the torture camp. She was beaten with a helmet brutally for going to the police station. She also said it was her fault to believe him .When she was first introduced to him, she never knew that he was a Muslim, and he introduced himself as a Hindu boy. The victim now wishes that law will give justice to her as her life has been destroyed by Gulzar Ahmed. She is not even well accepted in her village, as she lived for seven years with a Muslim husband and a mother of a Muslim boy. She said only time would tell what turn her life would take after the 7 year long horror in her life. The news has been widely published in local media, but authorities have yet to take action. The victim is now looking at the women’s commission to take appropriate steps and give her due justice.

Meanwhile, seeing the growing menace of love jihad in the State, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said that Assam Police must develop SoPs (Standard Operating Procedures) to help it to probe ‘Love Jihad’, as the Government is contemplating providing legislative backing to ensure prosecution of accused held for polygamy and child marriages.
