In a tragic incident, a mother of three committed suicide after her son was refused entry to the school for failing to deposit the school fees. The amount due was less than four thousand rupees. The woman was a native of the Mohibullapur area of the Madiyaon police station area in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Shyamu Yadav and Renu have three children, two daughters and a son. Shyam works as a tile labourer and Renu was a homemaker. Their eldest daughter, Kumud, was dropped from school as Shyamu was unable to manage her school expanse with others. His son, Abay, went to a private school, whereas, Ananya benefited from RTE (Right to Education).

Father failed to deposit fees

Almost three days ago, Abay was not allowed in the school by the administration as his parents failed to deposit the fees. Renu was deeply moved by this treatment with her son. She feared that his education would stop.

As Abhay was in class 10, Renu was even more concerned with his studies. She also indulged in an argument with Shyamu, which continued for two days. However, Shyamu did not pay the money.

Later, Abhay called Shyamu, who was at his work saying, “Mother has locked herself in the school and she is not answering.” A petrified Shyamu rushed to the house. With the help of locals, he broke the gate and found Renu’s body hanging from the fan.

Arranged 2,000 but failed to collect the rest

Shyamu told the media that he had managed to arrange two thousand rupees and was trying to get another two thousand. He would have managed to get the money in the coming days. Renu thought Abay would be dropped out of school.

He added that Abhay was studying at a private school that charged Rs 1,200 per month. Shyamu failed to deposit the sum for the past three months.

Inspector Shivanand Mishra said, as per the initial probe, the woman had committed suicide out for her son’s fee. The police did not find any suicide note at the crime scene. The family has not lodged any police complaints.

Mother jumped in front of bus to get money for children’s fee

Last week, a similar incident was reported from the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, where an elderly woman committed suicide in order to collect money from her children’s college. The woman did so, assuming that she would get financial compensation from the government if she died in a road accident.

The Salem police had initially registered a case of an accident. After the initial probe, the victim was identified as a sanitation worker employed on contract at the Salem district collectorate. “Those known to her have misled her that if anyone dies in a road accident hit by a bus, the government would give the family financial compensation, so she threw herself in front of the bus believing that the aid would be financial help for her children to complete their education,” a police official in Salem said. “She had died on the spot.”

Family committed suicide on failing to pay fees

In June 2019, A couple committed suicide along with their 11-year-old son after they failed to pay the child’s school fee in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district. The father worked as a goldsmith and was the family’s sole breadwinner, said police.

The bodies of the three were discovered at their home in the Velipalayam area of Nagapattinam by a family friend who went to check in on them after they failed to answer phone calls.

A deceased relative revealed that he had been struggling to get loans to pay his son’s school fees. However, he could not get it. No suicide note was found at their home.

Reports also say that the child, a student of class 6 at a private school in the city, was found wearing his favourite dress, uniform.
