Over the course of the last nine years, India has witnessed the operationalising of infrastructure at a speed and scale that has been a game changer. As a result, the country has witnessed a net of road, rail, water and air connectivity.
To enhance India’s overall infrastructure, the Narendra Modi Government launched the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), a unique, transformative approach for integrated planning across ministries and departments for the improvement of multimodal connectivity. This holistic approach is crucial to address isolated pockets and disruptions in favour of a seamless movement of people and goods. Uninterrupted processes lead to timely delivery of projects where milestones are achieved unerringly.
Today, where Vande Bharat trains are a symbol of the ‘Make in India’ success story, the 74 airports that have been built and operationalised in just the last nine years are a sign of the soaring aspirations ahead of us. If, on the one hand, Indian Railways are marching towards 100 per cent electrification, the construction of our National Highways has increased from 91,287 km in March 2014 to about 1,45,155 km at present. India’s Installed Power Generation Capacity has increased by 66 per cent, and there has been a 4.5 times increase in the expenditure on energy in the last nine years. When it comes to our railways, the arterial network of India, several impressive figures come to mind, including the doubling of railway lines: 272 per cent increase, electrification of railway tracks seeing a 548 per cent improvement and 16,289 more coaches being added to increase travel speed and comfort to the coach fleet. Gati Shakti is seen at its best in these remarkable exemplifications.
In concord with this holistic approach, over the last nine years, piped natural gas connections have increased from about 25 lakhs in 2014 to more than one crore in 2022. Similarly, door-to-door collection of waste has been achieved in 89,159 out of 91,845 wards (97.07 per cent). Over six times Increase in expenditure on IT and Telecom in the last 9 years has seen India achieve connectivity like never before. Be it internet connections (growth of 238 per cent) or broadband connections (growth of 1238 per cent), the seamless cycle of infrastructural connectivity, from physical to digital, has been phenomenal under the PM Modi-led government. This isn’t a surprise for those that now understand that having a big vision and delivering on that vision without delay are PM Modi’s twin fortes.
