In a significant development on the Maoist front, a Maoist couple with a reward of Rs 6 lakh surrendered before the authorities in insurgency-hit Sukma of Chhattisgarh on June 10.

The development occurred when Maoist couple Sodhi Joga (23) and Veko Kosi (22) turned before the officials of the district police and CRPF and surrendered.

As per the reports, Sodhi Joga and his wife, Veko Kosi, were members of the zonal technical committee of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist). It’s been learnt that Joga, who has several cases pending against him, had joined the banned Maoist outfit in 2015.

The couples were active in the Maoist-affected Maad area of the Narayanpur district. They were indulged in many exchanges of fire with the forces for which a reward of Rs 3 lakh each was already announced on them.

The couple were fed up and disappointed with the Maoist ideology; thus, they decided to surrender before the police under the state’s rehabilitation policy, said an official familiar with the development.

It is to be noted that as many as five active cadres of the People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA), the armed wing of the banned CPI Maoist, have so far surrendered before the police in the insurgency-hit Sukma district within the last ten days, as earlier as many as three active cadres of the banned outfit had also turned themselves before the authorities on June 3.

Cadres of the PLGA surrendering before the authorities

Let us tell you that the growing number of surrenders in the Maoist-affected Sukma district and the nearby adjoining region holds significance as the region is also considered to be the bastion of the strongest battalion of the PLGA, i.e. battalion number 1 led by notorious Maoist commander Madavi Hidma.

It is pertinent to mention here that the bordering region, which is located at the tri-junction of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Bijapur-Sukma of Chhattisgarh, has been a stronghold of the Maoist for a long where security forces have been continuously pushing them in recent times.

Interstate security meet held in Raipur

An Inter-state coordination committee meeting pertaining to intensifying inter-state counter-insurgency operation in the tri-junction region was also held at the police headquarters of Chhattisgarh on June 10.

The meeting was attended by the senior officials of the Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana police, where officials from paramilitary forces like CRPF, BSF and IB officials were also in attendance.

In the security meeting, it was agreed upon that the police of all these four states would be conducting joint counter-insurgency operations against the ultras, focusing on improving inter-state coordination and information sharing.

It’s been learnt that personnel from Greyhounds and SOG (special operation groups), elite counter-insurgency units of Telangana and Odisha police, respectively, will conduct joint operations with the personnel from CRPF, Cobra and DRG (District Reserve Guards) jawans of Chhattisgarh police.

Let us tell you that the Inter-state committee was formed to curb and counter the inter-state movements of the Maoist in the bordering region, which the Maoist had long used as a shield to evade their arrest after carrying out violent incidents.
