A Muslim boy stabbed a minor Hindu girl, identified as Mukti Burman (16) on her way back to school in Barhatta Upazila of the eastern district of Netrakona in Bangladesh. The victim’s family claimed that the murder was done for not entertaining the proposal of love extended by the accused.

This girl, who went to the school died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital around 5 pm on May 2.

The deceased Mukti Burman is the daughter of Nikhil Burman who lives in the Premnagar village of the Upazila. She is a tenth-grade student at Premnagar Salipura High School. The accused Kausar Miyan is the son of Shamsu Miyan and lives in the same village as the victim.

Liton Burman, the uncle of the deceased Mukti, said that Kausar had been harassing his niece for a long time on the way to and to school. The victim’s family also informed Kausar’s family, however, nothing changed.

Kausar stabbed and injured Mukti on the way back to school on May 2. Later, she was rescued by the locals and taken to Barhatta Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors after primary treatment sent her to Netrakona Modern Sadar Hospital.

She was declared dead after being taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from the Sadar hospital. Mukti’s classmates said that they left school around 3:30 on the day of the attack. They were returning home together. After reaching the Chalipura area, which is about two kilometres from the school, Kausar suddenly showed up and started stabbing Mukti. Fearing him all of them ran away and started screaming.

Local people rushed to rescue Mukti and took her to Barhatta Hospital. Premnagar Chalipura High School Principal Abul Khair Akand said, ‘Mukti’s family is very poor. The girl was dedicated and intelligent. She was very kind. This is very tragic. We demand the quick arrest of the criminal and exemplary punishment.’

Khokon Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Barhatta police station, said the police are conducting raids at various places to arrest the accused killer. The dead body of Mukti Burman has been kept in the mortuary of Mymensingh Medical College.

In protest of this murder, the local residents observed the human chain protests on May 3.

Notably, the police arrested the accused Kausar Miyan on May 3. Dedicated charges will be imposed against Miyan based on the statement of the minor victim.
