Indo-Myanmar Border: Assam Rifles to tighten security to stop influx in Mizoram

Assam Rifles will enhance vigilance along the 510-km stretch of the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram in a bid to prevent the influx of illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country, officials said.

In a bid to prevent the influx of illegal immigrants coming from the neighbouring nation of Myanmar into India, the Assam Rifles (paramilitary unit of the Indian Army) has tightened its security and vigilance in the 510 km stretch of the Indo-Myanmar Border in Mizoram.
On May 2, 2023, an official from the Assam Rifles said- “We will cease most of the crossings along the Indo-Myanmar border to prevent an illegal influx of immigrants which is largely responsible for disturbing the law-and-order situation in the north-eastern state of Mizoram.”
“Many refugees or illegal immigrants from both Myanmar and Bangladesh have acquired fake Indian identity cards,” he said.
Further, the official has said that many crime incidents have surged, especially murder cases. The reason behind these crimes is attributed to a military coup in Myanmar that has enabled the Myanmarese (Burmese) people in large numbers to take shelter in the north-eastern state of Mizoram.
He alleged that numerous groups in the ‘Chin State’ of Myanmar are “indulging in drug trafficking to India.”
After signing an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Mizoram State Government, the Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force of India, will shift its headquarters from Aizawl to Zokhawsang in a phased manner, said the official.
Zokhawsang is located 15km from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. The Assam Rifles official said there is no time for the relocation, and the MoU is being prepared.
Mizoram shares a 318 km long border with Bangladesh, and the BSF (Border Security Force) is designated to guard the international boundary with the country.
