Karnataka, India: A special court in Bengaluru sentenced two accused in the 2013 bomb blast case near the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Malleswaram to seven years imprisonment and fined them Rs 50,000. The accused, named Prakash Daniel Prakash and John Nasir, belonged to the banned terrorist organisation Al-Ummah and were convicted u/s 6 of the Explosive Substances Act.

The special judge, under the National Investigation Agency Act (NIA Act), CM Gangadhar passed the order sentencing the accused responsible for the 2013 bomb blast. The accused were charged u/s 120B, 121, 121A, 123, 307, 332, 435, 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, and 11, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20A of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The accused were sentenced after pleading guilty.

The trial court ordered the convicts to serve the remainder of the sentence apart from the time served in judicial custody.

The accused targeted the BJP office as the members of the banned terrorist organisation Al-Ummah were impatient with the then-government after the Bengaluru serial blasts case’s accused Abdul Nasir Madani’s arrest in 2008. Therefore, the accused detonated an IED bomb on a bike on April 13, 2013. 12 police personnel and one woman were injured in the incident.
