Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guard member, was arrested by federal authorities on April 12 concerning their investigation into the leaking of classified documents on the internet. Attorney General Merrick Garland made a brief statement at the Justice Department about the arrest of Teixeira by FBI agents on Thursday afternoon. The statement said, “Today, the Justice Department arrested Jack Douglas Teixeira in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified national defense information. Teixeira is an employee of the United States Air Force National Guard”.

The statement further added, “The FBI is continuing to conduct authorized law enforcement activity at the residence”. “Since late last week the FBI has aggressively pursued investigative leads, and today’s arrest exemplifies our continued commitment to identifying, pursuing, and holding accountable those who betray our country’s trust and put our national security at risk.”

The arrest of the airman came a week after the leak of highly sensitive information. While investigating the case, an intelligence official found top classified documents floating on social media sites like Twitter and Telegram. The leak contained details about the Russia-Ukraine war, the US spying on allies, and more. This leak is considered the most severe security breach since the 2010 WikiLeaks.

As per the reports, according to his service record, Teixeira was an airman 1st class at Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts. As a “Cyber Transport Systems Journeyman,” or an IT professional, he joined the Air National Guard in 2019. His duties, which include the maintenance of cabling and hubs for military communications networks, are similar an IT specialist. He was responsible for protecting the networks, which would have given him a high level of security clearance than an entry-level worker. Teixeira came from a long line of military veterans. However, it’s still unclear about his alleged role in the leak as he was the head of the private online group “Thug Shaker Central”, where the classified documents were allegedly shared.

Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the press secretary for the Pentagon, spoke to the media on Thursday, April 13, and described the online release of a cache of classified documents as a “deliberate criminal act”. He said that the US would continue reviewing the safeguarding of classified material. At the same time, addressing his concern about the leaked documents in the press conference, Ryder said, “We continue to review a variety of factors as it relates to safeguarding classified materials, this includes examining and updating distribution lists, assessing how and where intelligence products are shared and a variety of other steps”. He further added, “I would say, though, that it is important to understand that we do have stringent guidelines in place for safeguarding classified and sensitive information. This was a deliberate criminal act, a violation of those guidelines”.

Various media outlets were present at the press conference, but the identity of the Airmen was confirmed later on by Attorney General Merrick Garland. Though Ryder avoided commenting on the arrest & identity of the Airmen as the intelligence agencies & Pentagon is working “around the clock” to understand the scale and scope of the leak. The leak contained highly classified state secrets, including information about Ukraine’s spring offensive plan. This leak raised eyebrows and suspicions about the United States spying on its allies.
