Recently, the former Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi was convicted of two years of imprisonment by the Surat court for his ‘Modi’ surname remark made in 2019. Rahul, post-conviction has moved a plea in front of the sessions court challenging the magistrate’s order today (April 3).

While the Congress supremo is all set to file the appeal in the court the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) members questioned the arrogance of Gandhi, who earlier said, ‘I am Gandhi and Gandhi’s don’t seek an apology’.

Ever since Rahul has been convicted, many even the international media questioned the judiciary claiming the decision to be rigorous and biased.

However, many politicians who were either member of parliament or members of the state legislative assembly have been disqualified after conviction from time to time. There have been no ruckus or doubt on judiciary ever, except for when Rahul was convicted.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra at a press conference said, “When action was taken against PV Narasimha Rao, there is no fuss, but if it comes to Rahul Gandhi, the law changes. When action was taken on DK Shivakumar, why did Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi never held a press conference.”

He added, “Rahul Gandhi, his family members, CMs Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel are going to Surat and will be creating mayhem in the name of the appealing verdict… Are they trying to pressure the judiciary?”

Patra taking a dig at Gandhi said, the two R’s i.e, Rahul and Responsibility can never go together.

“Are you (Rahul Gandhi) not working to rub salt on the wounds of the OBC community by going to Surat today? You told the court that – I am Rahul, I will not apologise. Why this arrogance Rahul ji? Two R’s can never go together… Rahul and Responsibility,” said Patra slamming Gandhi.

“The BJP clearly wishes to state this to Rahul that he can not take the OBC community for granted, you can neither make offensive remarks nor abuse them. He can not question the judicial processes following his these unfortunate actions,” he added.

A court in Surat, Gujrat pronounced the verdict on a case against Rahul Gandhi on March 23. He was convicted and sentenced to two years of imprisonment.

In 2019, Gujrat ex-cabinet minister Punesh Modi filed a case against Rahul Gandhi for defaming the ‘Modi’ community. Rahul was speaking at a political rally in Kolar, a city in Karnataka where he called all Modi’s a thief.

While speaking at a rally in 2019 Rahul Gandhi said, “How come all thieves have Modi as common surname?”

On April 13, 2019, Rahul Gandhi at the rally in Kolar repeatedly asked, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi..how come they all have Modi as common surname? How come all the thieves have Modi as common surname?”

He also added, “The name Modi symbolises the collusion between India’s biggest crony capitalist and the Prime Minister of India”

Surat’s Chief Judicial Magistrate AN Dave while speaking with media in 2021 said, Gandhi, denied allegations of making any defamatory remarks on people with surname Modi.
