Karimganj: Thousands of Hindu pilgrims took a holy dip in the Barak river at Panchgram in the Karimganj district of Assam on March 19 on the occasion of Baruni Snan Mela. The Baruni Snan Mela is organised annually on Ashok Panchami Tithi, where devotees take holy dip in the Barak river beside the famous Siddheshwar Shiv temple.

The Barak river, which flows through the Barak valley of Assam, is believed to meet the holy Ganges in Bangladesh. Devotees offer puja to Maa Ganga and Lord Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi at the Barak river bank and offer puja to Lord Shiva in Siddheshwar temple.

On the occasion of Madhu Krishna Trayodashi tithi and Baruni Snan Mahotsav, pilgrims from different parts of the state took a holy dip in the Barak river. They performed Ganga Pujon at the Barak river bank.

Baruni Puja is a Hindu religious ceremony that is celebrated in the state of Odisha, India, particularly in the Puri district. It is also celebrated in different parts of West Bengal and the Barak Valley of Assam.

It is a form of worship that is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu, who is revered as the preserver of the universe in Hinduism. The word “Baruni” means “wife of the god,” and the puja is a celebration of the divine relationship between Lord Vishnu and his consort, the goddess Lakshmi.

The Baruni Puja is celebrated annually and typically takes place in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April). During the puja, devotees offer prayers and perform various rituals in honour of Lord Vishnu and the goddess Lakshmi.

The rituals may include singing devotional songs, offering flowers and other offerings to the deities, and reciting prayers and mantras. This year the Baruni Snan tithi started at 8.45 am on march 18 and continued till 3.30 am on March 20. During this period, thousands of devotees take a holy dip in the Baraka river and offer puja at Siddheshwar Shiv temple.

The district administration has deployed SDRF teams and police personnel for the safety and security of the pilgrims. A mela is being organised on this occasion at the Siddheshwar temple premises and will continue till Tuesday, a temple management committee member informed.
