Twenty years old Rupali Ramesh Chandsive had married Iqbal Mohammed Shaikh three years ago, and last night, Rupali was murdered and the accused in the case is none other than her estranged husband Iqbal. An FIR was registered by Rupali’s sister Karuna at Tilak Nagar Police station in Mumbai.
Rupali was Iqbal’s second wife and post marriage, Iqbal and his family had changed the name of Rupali to Zara. According to the FIR copy available with Organiser, Rupali’s sister Karuna has complained that Rupali was being forced by Iqbal’s family, to follow Muslim traditions, and was pressurized to dress like Muslims.
The FIR further mentions that, this had caused problems in the marriage leading to regular fights between Rupali and Iqbal. Things worsened to an extent that, Rupali decided to stay away from Iqbal. For the last six months Rupali along with her two year old son was staying separately from Iqbal and his family. Even after this whenever Iqbal and Rupali spoke on phone they would end up fighting.
On the night of September 26, Rupali was apparently called by Iqbal for a meeting, Rupali wanted separation from Iqbal, but Iqbal wanted custody of their son, to which Rupali had refused.
According to the complaint by Karuna, Rupali told her just before being declared dead, that Rupali had sought separation from Iqbal, but Iqbal refused it and instead asked for their son’s custody, and then Iqbal attacked Rupali with a sharp weapon slitting her throat and injuring hand.
Karuna has claimed in the FIR that, this happened on Monday night around 10.20 pm and from there they informed the Police, who took an injured Rupali to Rajawadi hospital where she was declared dead.
Karuna in her complaint has stated that Rupali told about Iqbal attacking her, while Rupali was being rushed to hospital and just before she went unconscious and being declared dead in the hospital by the doctors.
An FIR under sections, 302 of the IPC, 135 and 37(1)(a) of the Maharashtra Police act has been registered.
We tried to contact Rupali’s family, but the one who answered the phone informed that the family was pretty disturbed right now to talk.
Attempts made to contact Senior Police Inspector Sunil Kale and the DCP got us no response.
