Press Club of India, on Friday (June 10), condemned Delhi Police for registering FIR against journalist Saba Naqvi and demanded to withdraw her name from the FIR and stop the ongoing enquiry against her.

In an attempt to protect her, the Press Club of India even said Saba Naqvi’s insulting comments on mocking Shivling found in Gyanvapi cannot be called blasphemous.

Taking to Twitter, the Press Club of India said, “The Press Club of India vehemently condemns the lopsided and highhanded manner of Delhi Police in lodging FIR against Saba Naqvi, senior journalist and columnist.”

“The whimsical way of Delhi Police in reaching out to her posts reflects Delhi Police’s more-than-eagerness to make her posts blasphemous thereby registering her as accused for a crime which she has not committed at all. The Press Club demands immediate withdrawal of FIR against her and all ongoing enquiries against her be stopped forthwith,” it tweeted.

Delhi Police, on Wednesday (June 8), registered FIR against several, including Saba Naqvi, Nupur Sharma, Naveen Jindal, Maulana Mufti Nadeem, Abdur Rehman, and Gulzar Ansari, for spreading hateful messages on social and disturbing social harmony in the society.

After Shivling was found in the Gyanvapi Mosque during the survey premises, Saba Naqvi mocked shivling on May 18 by posting a picture of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. She wrote on Twitter that it was forwarded to her on WhatsApp, which said, ” Huge Shivling discovered at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.”

Several netizens criticised her tweet after it went viral, with many accusing Naqvi of insulting and hurting the sentiments of Hindus. Later, she deleted the tweet and posted an apology tweet, saying it wasn’t her intention to mock any belief.

She wrote, ” I shared a WhatsApp forward that I have deleted that was sent to me by multiple people through the day. Apologies if it caused any offence. Sincerely. Not at all the intention to mock any belief or faith system. A mistake. Thank you.”
