World Environment Day: Carbon emission in Gujarat on decline due to use of renewable energy

New Delhi: The Carbon emission generated during the process of energy production is reduced by around 115% more in the year 2022 as compared to 2017.

On June 5, 2022, on the occasion of World Environment Day, the Government of Gujarat has said that there has been a steady decline in the carbon emission, generated through thermal power, in the state in the last 5 years.

The reason behind this achievement is the promotion of renewable energy by the state government. At present, Gujarat ranks second in the country in terms of installed capacity of renewable energy, a state government source told this scribe.

The reduction in carbon emission through renewable energy in Gujarat was 12.08 million tonnes in the year 2017-18, which has increased to 26.01 million tonnes in the year 2021-22.

This way, Gujarat has been successful in reducing total carbon emission of 90.09 million tonnes through renewable energy in the last 5 years.

It is to be noted that coal is heavily used in the conventional electricity generation process, due to which carbon emission is also very high in this whole process.

Due to the higher increase in installed capacity of renewable energy, the dependence on conventional
modes of power generation gets reduced. The share of renewable energy (along with hydro energy)
was 29% with 8,065 MW installed capacity of power generation in Gujarat in the year 2017-18.

Now, in the year 2022, the share of renewable energy has increased to 42% with the contribution of 17,367 MW to the installed capacity of electricity generation.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has instructed the departments that the state government should ensure that Gujarat contributes the most to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve to make India a 0 per cent carbon emission country by 2070, Shailja Vachhrajani, GM, GUVNL, said

The Energy Department has also set a target of reduction in carbon emissions generated through energy production to 139 million tonnes by 2030.
