Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asserted that in the last eight years since coming to power, his government has made ‘honest efforts’ to build India of the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and gave dignity to the poor.

“Bapu wanted an India that would empower the poor, Dalit, victim, tribals, women; where hygiene and health become a way of life; whose economic system has indigenous solutions. In eight years, we made honest efforts to build India of the dreams of Bapu and Sardar Patel, “the Prime Minister said at Atkot in Gujarat.

He said, “Pucca houses to over 3 crore poor, freedom from ODF to over 10 crore families, freedom from smoke to over 9 crore poor women, electricity to over 2.5 crore poor families, tap water to over 6 crore families are not just data and statistics but evidence of our commitment to safeguard dignity of poor,” Mr Modi said.

This is first visit to his native state, which goes to polls in December this year, since his government completed eight years in office on May 26.

The Prime Minister is on a day’s visit to Gujarat on Saturday.

Mr Modi inaugurated the Matushri KDP Multispeciality Hospital at Atkot in Rajkot.

The hospital will make available high end medical equipment and provide world class health care facilities to the people of the region.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister will address the Seminar of Leaders of various Cooperative Institutions on ‘Sahakar Se Samriddhi’ at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, where he will inaugurate World’s first Nano Urea (Liquid) Plant constructed at Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO) at Kalol.

There are more than 84,000 cooperative societies in the state. The organization of the Seminar of leaders of various Cooperative institutions on ‘Sahakar Se Samriddhi’ is yet another step towards further strengthening the cooperative movement in the state.

More than 7,000 representatives from various cooperative institutions of the State will participate in the Seminar.

The Nano Urea (Liquid) Plant has been built at the cost of around 175 crore rupees in an effort to further provide farmers the means to boost productivity and help increase their income.

In his speech, the Prime Minister further said that “when the pandemic began, the poor began facing a food crisis – we opened the food grain stores for the people of the country. For a life of dignity to women, direct transfer was made to Jan Dhan bank accounts. Money was transferred to the bank accounts of farmers”.

He further said free gas cylinders were arranged so that kitchens of the poor can go on. “When the challenges of medical treatment increased, we eased the testing and treatment facilities for the poor. When vaccines came, we ensured free vaccines for every Indian,” the Prime Minister said.
