Congress leader Navjot Sidhu has received a big blow from the Supreme Court of India. He has been sentenced to 1-year rigorous imprisonment in the road rage case. The Supreme Court has modified its earlier order in the matter. Earlier, Sidhu was punished with a fine of only 1000 rupees. This case of road-rage dates back to 1988. In which an elderly man died after he was beaten to death by Navjot Singh Sidhu.

About the whole Road-Rage Incident

Gurnam Singh was killed in this gruesome act in 1988 in Patiala, Punjab. Sidhu and his friend Kanwar Singh Sandhu were convicted by the Punjab Haryana High Court for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced to three years in prison. But in July 2018, the Supreme Court completely acquitted Sandhu. Whereas Sidhu was only convicted of assault and punished with a fine of only one thousand rupees.

Against the Supreme Courts’ judgement, the family of Gurnam Singh approached the Supreme Court. The family demanded a reconsideration of the decision. On 13 September 2018, the court accepted the petition for consideration. But then the court had made it clear that it would only consider the demand for increasing the punishment. This meant that Sidhu would not be booked again for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
