Ray’s film to be screened; India delighted for honour at Cannes, says PM

Another highlight of the India's participation would be the World Premiere of the Movie "Rocketry" produced by R. Madhavan.

Satyajit Ray’s noted film ‘Pratidwandi’ on youth unrest and joblessness issue released in 1970 will be screened in the Classics section of the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

“Delighted about India’s participation as a Country of Honour at Marché du Film-festival de Cannes. As India celebrates its 75th year of independence,75th anniversary of Cannes Film Festival and 75 yrs of Indo-French diplomatic ties enhance pride associated with momentous milestones,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

“It is heartening to note that a film by one of India’s most renowned filmmakers, Satyajit Ray, has been restored for screening at the Cannes Classics section, when India is celebrating the birth centenary of the legendary filmmaker,” Mr Modi said in his message.

Satyajit Ray’s film ‘Pratidwandi’ will be screened on May 19.

Union Information Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his delight about the screening, sharing how the filmmaker has a rich, historic association with the festival.

He even took to his official Twitter handle and highlighted the journey and achievements of Satyajit Ray in a 1.37-minute-long video.

The Prime Minister in his message also said that India possesses potential to become content hub of world.

India’s participation this year is as a Country of Honour at Cannes.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur visited the site of the India pavilion. The pavilion opens on Wednesday, May 18.

Mr Modi also said that this edition of the Cannes Film Festival is special in many ways.

Many Startups from India will showcase their strengths to the cinema world.

India Pavilion will display facets of Indian cinema and promote international partnerships, Mr Modi said.

Notably, this is for the first time that such an honour is being bestowed to any country.

The ‘Country of Honour’ Status to India ensures India’s presence as a Focus Country at the Opening Night of Marche Du Films being organised at the Majestic Beach.

India is also a Country of Honour at the Cannes Next, under which five new Start-Ups would be given an opportunity to pitch to the Audio-Visual Industry.

Officials have said that ten professionals will participate in the Animation Day networking.

Another highlight of the India’s participation would be the World Premiere of the Movie “Rocketry” produced by R. Madhavan.

The movie would be showcased in the Palais K. of the market Screening on May 19.
