A charge sheet had been filed in the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sealdah, against the 20 accused, who were involved in rioting and violence after the election results were announced on May 2, 2021.

New Delhi: The probe into the murder of BJP leader Abhijit Sarkar in West Bengal has gained further momentum with the arrest of two absconders.

The CBI, on Wednesday (February 16), apprehended two absconders and were produced before the court. The two were remanded to two days' custody. The absconders have been identified as Rahul Dey and Sourav Dey.

CBI sources say the two accused were among seven absconding individuals after being accused of Sarkar's murder. The BJP worker was killed in the post-poll violence in the Narkeldanga area of West Bengal shortly after the election results were announced on May 2, 2021.

Primarily, around 20 individuals were accused of rioting and violence by the police.  A charge sheet had been filed in the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sealdah, against these 20 accused.

The CBI also had announced a Rs 50,000 reward for information about absconders. "The CBI has declared a cash reward of Rs 50,000 against each, and it will be given by the CBI to anyone who will give information leading to their arrest," read the order from the premier probe agency.

The Sealdah Court also has several cases against the accused persons, namely Arun Dey, Sukhdeo Poddar alias Sukha, Gopal Das alias Bishal Paul, Saurav Dey alias Guddu, Rahul Dey, Biswajit Das alias Bompa and Amit Das in the BJP worker's murder case.

The two have been accused of beating the BJP worker and vandalizing his house. As per the charge sheet filed by the CBI, the deceased BJP worker (Sarkar) was rescued after being attacked but could not be saved owing to the brutal blows.

The Mamata Banerjee-ruled West Bengal government was left red-faced and put on the defensive following the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) report on post-poll violence in West Bengal last year.

The NHRC report said, "The violent incidents in West Bengal reflect appalling apathy of the state government towards the plight of victims."

Minutes after some of the content of the report submitted to the Calcutta High Court by the NHRC team, BJP MP Arjun Singh said, "The BJP stands vindicated of what it has been stating earlier. There is no law and order in the state of West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee."

The Mamata Banerjee-led dispensation was embarrassed on July 2, 2021, when the five-member bench of the Calcutta High Court had said: "From a perusal of the report prima facie stand taken by the petitioners is established that there had been post poll violence, and the state was found on a wrong foot, where throughout it was on a denial mode."
