Shashikant Das said he is impressed by the development work of the BJP government in Assam and feels that BJP is fulfilling all the promises made during the last election campaign.

Guwahati: The humiliation phase for the congress is not yet over for the grand old Congress party in Assam. Continuous defeat in elections, internal fights, and switch over of party MLAs to the ruling BJP and other parties is on the move for the INC. Two senior Congress legislators in Assam switched to the BJP three months after the assembly election and won again comfortably to the Assam assembly in November by-election, and Congress strength was reduced to 27 members in the assembly.

On Monday (20 December), Congress MLA from Raha constituency in central Assam Shashikant Das met the Chief Minister at his residence early in the morning. State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita was also present in the meeting, and their meeting picture is now in the public domain.

This development creates a bundle of rumours in the political circle in Dispur. On the sideline of the ongoing winter session of the Assam assembly, MLA Shashikant Das told the media that he was impressed by the development work of the BJP government in Assam. He feels that chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is fulfilling all the promises made during the last election campaign. Shashikant Das said he will support the state government's development agenda and will be with the government for development. But the Congress MLA didn't clarify whether he would join BJP or not. Chief Minister Dr Sarma told the media that Raha MLA said he would support the government even though he is presently a Congress MLA and further added that MLA Das will use the lobby of the ruling party MLAs. Many more Congress MLAs are eagerly waiting to join Das for the sake of development in the state.

After the clear statements by the Chief Minister and MLA Shashikant Das, it is for sure that sooner or later, the Congress MLA will switch over to the saffron party. But how many other Congress MLAs follow in his footsteps will be very interesting to see. The Congress party recently organised two days of motivational workshops for its MLAs and leaders in the presence of central leaders like P Chidambaram, Jitendra Singh, etc.

On the other hand, suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali, who was in jail for the last 3months for his derogatory comments against the martyrs of Assam agitation, announced he would soon join his original party, AIUDF, after coming out of jail on bail.
