201 cows were recovered on the way to a slaughterhouse in two days; 28 cow smugglers were arrested by Assam police

131 cows were recovered in Sonapur, and 7 people were arrested. Goalpara police recovered 70 cows from a boat in the Brahmaputra river. Nagaon police seized 112 cows and arrested 21 smugglers in several operations.

 

Guwahati: Even though the Assam police and the Border Security Force (BSF) have taken stern measures to curb illegal cow transportation, the crooked cow smugglers are always searching for a new route for cow smuggling. Assam police and BSF have almost sealed all the transit routes to Bangladesh for cow smugglers through the water. After enacting the Cattle Protection Act 2021 in Assam, the police have taken tough action against cow smugglers.

Guwahati city police on Tuesday (November 30) morning intercepted six trucks carrying 131 cows without valid documents. The cows were suspected of having been stolen transported from Sonitpur and Sivasagar district. Police seized the vehicles and arrested 6 cow smugglers Md. Abdul Sattar, Md. Ikramul Hussain, Md. Saidul Talikdar, Makhidul Islam, Jamiruddin, Amir Karmakar and Dipak Nahak. All arrested smugglers are from the Samaguri area of Nagaon district. The seized cows consignment was on its way to Bangladesh through Meghalaya.

On Sunday night, Goalpara district police in Assam, on confirmed information, placed several check Naka in river Brahmaputra. A huge consignment of cows was transported in riverboats from the Baghbar rivers and to Meghalaya. Several teams of river police patrolled in the Brahmaputra in search of the smuggled consignment of cows. At around 1.30 am in the night, police intercepted one large riverboat carrying cows towards Pancharatna in Goalpara district. Goalpara SP V V Reddy said that seeing the police team, the smugglers tried to divert the boat. The police team fired five rounds of bullets to stop the boat. The smugglers fled, jumping into the water. The police team recovered 70 cows from the abandoned boat. SP Reddy said that the smugglers were planning to carry the cows to Meghalaya, and then they would try to smuggle them to Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Nagaon police have recovered 112 Cattles and arrested 21 cow smugglers and 10 vehicles seized in various areas under Kaliabor Sub-division in the last fortnight while attempting illegal transport for butchering. Most of them are suspected to be stolen.
