Guwahati: A woman with her 2 months old baby daughter tries to kill herself jumping from the roof of a Masjid in Morigaon district of Assam on Wednesday after years of physical and mental tortures by her husband Riyazuddin and his family. The women rescued by police and SDRF alleged that her husband Riyazuddin, who  and his family regularly tortured her physically and mentally for not giving birth to a son. The incident took place in Mikirgaon village on Wednesday morning at around 11 am.

The woman who gave birth to a baby girl two months ago was constantly tortured by her husband's family after the birth of her girl child. She was locked in a room for the last three days and was not given food and water. Wednesday morning while her husband and brothers were away from home, she broke the lock and somehow escaped. She straightway went to the newly constructed masjid of the village and climbed up to the roof along with her infant daughter. She then demanded to immediately arrest her husband and his family.

The woman asked local people to give her justice or otherwise she would jump from the roof with her infant. Locals called the police but she refused to get down before the arrest of Riyazuddin and his family. After some negotiations Jaluguti police station in charge Biswajit Saikia convinced her to hand over the infant. While the police officer took the infant from the woman, a team of SDRF rescued the lady. Meanwhile the accused husband Riyajuddin was arrested by police.

The woman who is a master degree holder in Islamic religious studies, told the media that Riyazuddin and his family tortured her for several years for dowry and the torture increased when she gave birth to a baby girl. Her husband Riyazuddin disowned the baby and tried to kill her. A case has been registered against the arrested Riyazuddin and his family.
