Guwahati: On the occasion of Deepawali (also known as Deepanwita, Diwali or Dewali), the Hindu festival of lights, Assam government dedicated a newly built two-lane flyover at Supermarket-GS Road area on Thursday in the virtual capital of northeast Bharat. Inaugurating the flyover, State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured that the BJP-led government is committed to take development momentum to a new height.

Constructed  with a financial outlay of rupees over 127 crore, the 1205 metre long flyover was completed in a record 22 months instead of the targeted three years.  With its inauguration, the flyover will considerably reduce traffic congestion at Supermarket from Khanapara to Ganeshguri, Ganeshguri to Last Gate and vice versa.

Stating that Guwahati being the gateway to ASEAN countries, CM Sarma said that infrastructural development in the city augurs well for the development of the entire State. He also informed that the under-construction Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge over the mighty Brahmaputra river will be inaugurated by December 2023.

AIIMS at Changsari near Guwahati will be inaugurated this financial year. Two more under construction flyovers at Sarab bhati and Maligaon will also be completed within 2023, informed Sarma, adding that the government has decided to construct one more flyover to serve RG Baruah Road-Geetanagar tri-junction.

In presence of State legislative assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, ministers CM Patowary, Ashok Singhal, Atul Bora with a host of other dignitaries, Sarma also declared that two flyovers at Basistha Chariali and Gorchuk will also be built soon. Another flyover from Guwahati Club to Bamunimaidan area will also be constructed and DPR is in the advanced stage of completion, he added.

The government is understood to plan a six-lane ring road connecting  Baihata-Sipajhar, Kuruwa-Narengi with the national highway. It will be taken up under the Bharat Mala Project. In the next five year, there will be three more bridges connecting Bharalu (Guwahati)- North Guwahati, Narengi- Kuruwa and Palashbari-Sualkuchi localities for the benefit of commuters.

An integrated sports complex at the now-defunct Chandrapur thermal power project area is also on the cards. Moreover, the drinking water project of Guwahati is nearing completion. The government is also working sincerely for the Brahmaputra river-front beautification project besides creating new gardens in Hengrabari, Fancy Bazar and Maligaon areas, stated a government source.

Earlier on Wednesday,   Sarma   attended Deepotsav   festival  at Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre in the city. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for celebrating river festivals in his Mann ki Baat program and the Deepotsav is an effort in that regard to make the people aware about the effects of climate change and how to protect the environment. People should  join hands  with  the government   to protect   the environment through preservation of greenery, added Sarma
