AASU, AGP, AJYCP staged a statewide protest against MLA Sherman Ali for his derogatory remarks.

Guwahati: Controversial Congress MLA Sherman Ali of Baghbar constituency in Barpeta district wants to hang DC-SP of Darrang district for evicting migrant Muslims in Dhalpur. In a very controversial statement, the MLA said that the martyrs of Assam agitation are murderers. In a video statement, Sherman Ali said, "8 youth who were killed by migrant Muslims in Dhalpur in 1983 were murderers. These killings should be appreciated. They went to kill the Muslims out there and so, in defence, they killed the murderers. If I were there, I would have also killed them," Sherman, who wants to set up 'Miya' museum in Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, also said, "If Congress returns to power in Assam, we will re-investigate it and make sure that the SP-DC of Darrang district, who led the eviction drive in Dhalpur against Muslims, would hang."

Indigenous people of Assam sharply condemned the remark of the Congress party MLA. AGP staged a statewide protest against the controversial remark by MLA Sherman Ali. AGP president and agriculture minister Atul Bora said that it was not one MLA's remark. It was a remark by the entire Congress party. Congress killed 855 martyrs during a legitimate agitation. Now their anti-Assamese stand is exposed to everyone. The All Assam Students Union (AASU) strongly condemned the insulting remarks to the martyrs by the Congress party and staged a statewide protest. The student body alleged that the Congress party always acts like a saviour of illegal immigrants. By insulting the martyrs of the Assam agitation, they insulted the whole Assamese society. AASU GS Shankar Jyoti Baruah said that the Congress party wanted to settle the illegal Muslims in Assam.

Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Party (APCC) served a show-cause notice to the controversial MLA. Senior BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan said that if the Congress party has guts, they should expel Sherman Ali for his derogatory remark against the martyrs and the Assam police. BJP MP Dilip Saikia demands an apology from the Congress party and urges the state government to file a case against Sherman Ali for his derogatory remarks on martyrs and police.
