Granting the request of MP (Rajya Sabha) Rakesh Sinha, Poojya Shankaracharya Vijayendra Saraswati said a statue of Ubhaya Bharati will be established in the Kanchi Mutt.
Poojya Shankaracharya expressed his desire to develop an intellectual and spiritual centre in Mithila which would bridge the gap between the North and South.
MP Sinha said he would take the initiative to develop such a centre. He said to the Organiser, “We will soon start the work tom develop an intellectual centre in Mithila where statues of Adi Shankaracharya, Mandan Mishra and Ubhaya Bharati would be installed.”
MP Sinha met Poojya Shankaracharya in Kanchi on Saturday (September 18), where the two discussed a whole range of issues for over an hour.
He added, “Poojya Shankaracharya also expressed his desire to develop world class healthcare facilities for the poor people in the region. We will soon start work on this also.”
Ubhaya Bharati, a leading female intellectual who was the contemporary of Adi Shankaracharya, was born in Mithila. She was married to Mandan Mishra.
She played the arbitrator’s role in the historical debate between Adi Shankaracharya and Mandan Mishra. Such was the level of her brilliance that Adi Shankaracharya had to take a leave of six months before resuming the debate again.
MP Sinha said, “It is very unfortunate that very few people know about her great intellect and wisdom. Our aim will be to make people aware of her great intellect.”
He added that the to-be-established intellectual centre would bridge the intellectual and spiritual gap between the North and South.
Kanchi alone has over 240 temples, with each having a unique history of its own. Tamil Nadu has over 40,000 temples.
MP Sinha said to the Organiser, “We are also planning to start an initiative where study materials will be prepared in Hindi about the uniqueness and history of these temples. This will help the people in North understand the great spiritual tradition of the South.”
Since no picture of Ubhaya Bharati is available, the Kanchi Muth will work on drawing a picture of her, which will be used to develop the statue.
MP Sinha said, “We will also work on bringing out some print material with the purpose to introduce the masses about the intellectual calibre of Ubhaya Bharati.”
