In a first of its kind, the Banaras Hindu University is going to offer a two-year degree course in Hinduism. The course will offer an in-depth study of the Hindu religion and its ancient practices.

“It will be the first degree course of Hinduism in our country. Earlier, only a diploma course was running in Himachal university. We are teaching other cultures, traditions like Christianity, Islam in universities while Hinduism was not on streamline”, The Times of India quoted BHU Vice-Chancellor, Vijay Kumar Shukla.

The two-year degree course has 40 seats, for which applications are invited from September 7. Admissions will be offered through an entrance exam which will be conducted on October 3.

The Department of Philosophy, which is the nodal office for the course, will explain the soul of Hinduism, ambitions and outlines of Hinduism. The other departments like ancient history and Sanskrit will also take up some courses.

The BHU is also planning to attract foreign students to this course.
