The vandalism and looting happened on Saturday (August 8) after a local cleric demanded a Hindu religious procession stoppage.

On Saturday, a mob of Islamists vandalised at least four temples and looted over 50 Hindu homes in Bangladesh’s Khulna district.

The incident happened after a local cleric demanded a religious procession of the temple be stopped.

The cleric incited the mob to vandalise the temples.

Within minutes, hundreds gathered demanding the wipeout of the temples and started attacking the temples in the area with rods and hammers.

The mob also attacked the Hindu houses in the village.

“Hundreds of Islamic extremists attacked Shiali and Gowara villages in Rupsha upazila of Khulna district yesterday. All the temples and 58 Hindu houses in the area have been vandalized. Police haven’t taken any action yet. Even no media in Bangladesh has published this incident,” posted Bangladesh Hindu Unity Council on the microblogging platform Twitter.

“It is an unfortunate and condemnable incident. We urge the Bangladeshi government to arrest the perpetrators and compensate the Hindu community members for damage to the property,” said VHP National Spokesperson Vinod Bansal.

He added, “We also request the Indian government to take the matter up with the Bangladeshi authorities.”
