Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not only calling the players after they are getting medals but was also calling and encouraging them before they left for Tokyo, said Anju Bobby George.

Things have changed a lot from our times in 2004 and now there is all round encouragement and support to players, said former world champion Anju Bobby George.

She said, “Something big is happening in India, a lot of changes. I’m missing all those fun and opportunities.”

She also recounted when she had won Bronze in World Championships in 2003 and Gold in World Athletics Final in 2005, the Prime Minister had called her but there was no big celebration.

She said now even when the players were leaving for the Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called them and their family members. It’s a big change.

There is support from the very beginning which athletes expect from the system, ministries, she added.

Neeraj Chopra, who created history by winning India’s first individual Gold in Olympics in field and track event, had posted on June 16 “As far as preparations for @Tokyo2020 are concerned, all my requirements have been taken care of in the best possible way. I'm training in Europe currently and am thankful for the efforts made by the government and the Indian embassy, despite the tough visa rules.”

India is closing the Tokyo Olympics medal tally with one Gold, two Silver and five Bronze.
