Guwahati: Former Congress leader Sushanta Borgohain formally joins Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. He resigned from the Congress party and Assam assembly on Saturday.

Before joining BJP formally, Sushanta Borgohain met Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday at his residence.

Taking to Twitter, chief minister Dr Sarma wrote, “I am glad to have met Hon MLA of Thowra Sri Sushanta Borgohain, who resigned from @INCIndia on July 31, & joins @BJP4India today. Young, and energetic, his joining our fold will strengthen and benefit the party immensely. I welcome him to the BJP Pariwaar. @JPNadda.”

Sushanta Borgohain is a two time MLA from Thowra in Sivasagar district of Upper Assam. In his resignation letter to Congress, president Borgohain mentioned – "My resignation from a party to be read in conjunction with the changed internal political atmosphere within the party, something I tried very hard to change so that the party remains relevant in a state like Assam. Unfortunately, all the efforts in this direction proved futile, compelling me to take this ultimate decision."

Before Borgohain, Morioni congress MLA also joined the ruling BJP in July.
