Boxer Lovlina ensures another medal for India in Tokyo Olympic

With this win, the boxer has secured a medal for team India in the welterweight category.

 

 

Guwahati: After Manipur weightlifter Mirabai Sanu, Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain ensures another medal for India at Tokyo Olympic. The Indian boxer defeated Chen Nien-chin (4-1) of Chinese Taipei in Women’s welterweight (69kg) quarterfinal at Tokyo Olympics 2021.

 

Lovlina won the first round and played aggressively to win the match 4-1. With this win, the boxer has secured a medal for team India in the welterweight category.

 

Chen Nien-chin had faced Lovlina Borgohain thrice before and won on all three occasions. Chen Nien-chin is currently ranked third while Lovlina is fifth.

 

Lovlina has two World Championship bronze medals to her name. The first came at the 2018 World Championships in New Delhi. On 4th August, Lovlina will play her semi-final against Busenaz Surmeneli from Turkey.

 

Lovlina will be the first woman from Assam to win an Olympic medal and the only second women boxer from India after MC Mary Kom to win a medal for the country. Assam chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulates Lovlina for her splendid win in the quarterfinal.
