Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been putting curbs on narcotics smuggling and cattle slaughter, against which he brought a law in the state assembly.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has related the violence at the Assam- Mizoram borders to his government’s crackdown on narcotics smuggling and the new law which regulates slaughter, consumption and transportation of cattle.
The CM said that the drugs route originates in Myanmar and passes through Mizoram and Assam’s Barak Valley to Punjab. He also urged Mizoram CM Zoramthanga to probe how civilians got access to bulletproof vests and sniper rifles to attack the cops.
“I have video evidence. I think it should be investigated whether certain vested non-state actors entered the fray,” Dr Sarma said. “I have strong reasons to believe that some decisions by the Assam government in the last two months angered non-state elements in Mizoram,” Sarma added.
Assam’s refusal to provide sanctuary to a section of Myanmar refugees entering Mizoram might be one of the trigger points, Dr Sarma pointed out.
