A team of doctors led by Neurosurgeon Dr. Deepak Gupta at All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, performed brain surgery on 24-year-old Yukti Agarwal to remove a brain tumour.
Yukti, for the duration of the surgery, was reciting Hanuman Chalisa, devotional hymns for God Hanuman.
The surgical procedure took three hours.
In some brain surgeries, it is important for the patient to keep responding. The condition of staying awake during brain surgery is known as 'awake craniotomy'. In such operations, patients are kept active to ensure that critical areas of their brain are not damaged. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, has carried out many such surgeries in the last three decades.
Yukti also had conversations with doctors in the course of surgery.
In November 2018, young Kira Laconetti was operated upon to remove a brain tumour in Seattle. She was signing during the course of operation.
In another reported case, a 53-year-old patient in London played a violin while surgeons operated on her brain to remove a tumour at the King's College Hospital.
