Guwahati: The smugglers, along with their illicit beneficiaries, are feeling the heat and have targeted the forces dedicated to protecting cows in Bharat, as the Assam government plans to introduce a bill in the next state legislative assembly session with a focus on guarding cattle (cows).
It may be mentioned that the smuggling of cattle on the Indo-Bangladesh border, where Assam lately emerged as an illegal transit route, often makes the news. An increasing trend of activities in all Bangladesh bordering north-eastern States (including Assam) has been observed in the last two years.
It may be because of a halt of cattle smuggling through West Bengal following the combined efforts of BSF personalities based on the State and members of the Dhyan Foundation. Lately, the non-government organization has formed DF Goalpara Gaushala to rehabilitate the cattle rescued by BSF soldiers in Assam.
To date, the organization has spent a sizeable amount of money in setting up basic infrastructures and arrangements for transporting cattle to gaushala, feeding, and nursing the domestic animals. Looking at the increasing number of rescued cattle, the organization is looking to set up three more shelters in Assam.
The initiative has hit the very backbone of the cattle mafia, giving a severe blow to their illegal venture, which generated crores of black money to fund terrorism. The BJP led Assam government is all set to execute a complete ban on cow transportation outside the State. Hence the worrying mafia is now trying to paralyze the noble cause.
“Our volunteers have received countless threats, often attacked as well. There are plenty of instances where attempts have been made to pressurize them through certain corrupt officials. And when none of it has worked, the mafia has spread defamatory news to taint the reputation of the organization and belittle their sincere efforts to save the cattle,” said a statement issued by Nirja Singh from DF Goalpara Gaushala.
The statement said that the organization has taken care of many cows by protecting them from the meat mafia, but they are being reported by some journalists who have sinister motivations.
