Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Tuesday ordered officials to start the process of conversion of dissolved madrasas into general schools.
The previous BJP government in Assam led by Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal had brought a bill to dissolve all the government run madrasas in the state.
The Assam Assembly passed the Assam Repealing Bill 2020, which abolished both the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation) Act, 1995 and the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation of Services of Employees and Re-Organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act, 2018.
With the passing of this bill, nearly 620 government aided madrasas ceased to exist. The aim was to convert them to regular schools by April 1 but it couldn’t be done because of the assembly election in the state.
Current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was the education minister in the previous BJP government.
The government was annually spending about INR 260 crore annually on madrasas.
Chief Minister Sarma had said the move would secularise education in the state.
He also added that the government could not be spending money on religious education.
