The West Bengal assembly poll results have been declared. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress has retained power winning more than two-third seats.
But, Banerjee has lost her seat. The BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari defeated her by 1956 votes in the Nandigram Assembly constituency.
The Opposition benches have changed. It’s saffron now.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has won 77 seats.
So, the big question on everyone’s mind is: How is the Bengal politics going to be?
If Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s election victory speech is any indication, there will be more political violence in West Bengal.
The anger of losing Nandigram was written all over face although her party has won a landslide victory.
She said, “Good that I won’t have to go that far.”
No one had forced her to go there. She had left her traditional seat of Bhabanipur in Kolkata to contest from Nandigram which is a three-hour drive from Kolkata.
More than 150 BJP workers have lost their lives in the past four years.
Many incidents of violence were reported Sunday. Many BJP workers were attacked and their houses and vehicles torched.
Even Suvendu Adhikari was heckled and stones were pelted on his car.
Not even once did Mamata Banerjee appeal to her cadre to maintain peace.
On the contrary, she gave enough evidence to suggest she was going to adopt a very confrontational approach with the Union government, read BJP.
A considerable part of her speech was dedicated to describing the imaginary problems with the Election Commission.
In her campaign speeches, she had promised free vaccine of Covid-19 to the people. But, in her victory speech, she threatened the Union government to provide her vaccines free of cost.
If not? She said she would be back on the streets.
Mamata Banerjee has never been known to practice consensual politics.
Remember how she had threatened a college student when she had asked her question in a town hall meeting. Not only did she brand her a Left cadre, but also left the meeting midway.
The 77 newly elected BJP legislators will be a thorn in her eyes as they would not be sitting idle.
The anger will also spill down on the BJP cadre.
