The Union government asked the social media companies, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to restrict accounts from spreading fake news and creating panic among people.
The accounts include some prominent politicians like West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, social media influencers and freelance journalists.
A Twitter account of Banerjee, Banglar Gorbo Mamata, with about 141000 followers, have been caught spreading fake news on many occasions.
The organiser had previously reported how former Congress president and Nehru family scion Rahul Gandhi’s official account has been caught spreading fake news.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology sources said only accounts which were spreading fake news have been asked to be restricted.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Sarkaryavah Shri Dattatreya Hosabole Saturday requested the people to be cautious against anti-Bharat forces. He also cautioned against people using the power of social media to spread panic in society.
Many freelance journalists have been caught spreading fake news on several occasions.
Some have refused to take down their posts once it had been found that it was fake news.
