The Union government Friday announced it would be providing free ration to poor families for two months, May and June.

About 80 crore beneficiaries will be getting free ration. Each poor family will get an additional 5 kg ration per person per month for free.

It will be over and above the wheat, rice and grain which they’re entitled to get at rupees 3, 2 and 1 per kg respectively.
It will cost the government about INR 26000 crores.

Last year too, the Union government had provided every poor family 5 kg wheat/rice per person per month and 1 kg pulse per family per month for free under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana.

The scheme covered the period from April-November last year.
