The Supreme Court Monday dismissed Syed Waseem Rizvi’s petition of removing 26 verses from Quran which he claimed was used by extremists to justify killings of non-believers.
The Court imposed a fine of INR 50000 on Rizvi.
Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman observed the petition as “absolutely frivolous writ petition”.
Former Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board Chairman Rizvi had petitioned the court that the 26 verses he had mentioned, were used by extremists to spread hatred and terrorism.
Rizvi’s lawyer, R K Raizada, confined his plea to Madrasa education arguing young Muslim children spend considerable time in Madrasa and these verses were indoctrinating them with hatred for the non-believers.
Raizada said, “Students are not to be indoctrinated. Salafists and Wahabis are using this. This means internationalisation of terror is happening.”
Rizvi has been receiving death threats for filing the petition.
Muslim groups has been saying this was an attempt to defame Islam and spread Islamophobia.
