New Delhi: Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana alias Justice N V Ramana will be the next Chief Justice of India. An official notification from the Union Ministry of Law issued here on Tuesday said his appointment will come into effect from April 24, 2021.
Justice Ramana succeeds incumbent Chief Justice S A Bobde, who would retire on April 23.
Justice Ramana was part of the panel of judges which held that the Chief Justice’s office need to come under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
He was also in the apex court bench that ruled that suspension of the Internet in Jammu and Kashmir should be reviewed.
About a fortnight back, the Supreme Court had dismissed a complaint from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy alleging that Justice Ramana was interfering in the functioning of the judiciary in the state.
Justice Ramana will have a term as CJI till August 26, 2022. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014, Justice Ramana was the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
He will be the second Chief Justice of India from Andhra Pradesh. Prior to him Justice K Subba Rao was the Chief Justice between 1966 and 1967.
Justice Ramana was born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district on August 27, 1957. He has specialised in constitutional, criminal, service and inter-state river laws.
