Restaurants and shops in north Delhi will now have to “mandatorily” display whether the meat being sold or served is halal or jhatka as the BJP-led North Delhi Municipal Corporation cleared a proposal in this regard, its mayor said.
Mayor Jai Prakash on Wednesday said that in Hinduism & Sikhism, ‘halal’ meat is prohibited.
He said that they have approved a proposal, making it mandatory for all restaurants, dhabas & meat shops in North Delhi Municipal Corporation to put up posters stating whether they serve/sell ‘halal’ or ‘jhatka’ meat.
The proposal was recently moved by the Standing Committee of the NDMC.
North Delhi Mayor Jai Prakash said the House “cleared the proposal in its meeting on Wednesday”. “So, restaurants and shops in north Delhi will now have to mandatorily display whether the meat being sold or served is halal or jhatka,” he said.
He also said that in Hinduism & Sikhism, ‘halal’ meat is prohibited.
Jhatka’ method is one in which an animal is slaughtered in one go, while in the ‘halal’ method, an animal is allowed to die after cutting a vein.
This comes after months after the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) passed a proposal that makes it mandatory to write ‘halal ‘ or ‘jhatka’ for the meat being served and sold by restaurants and meat shops. A similar proposal was cleared by the House of the BJP-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation late January.
‘Halal’ means “permissible” in Arabic. Food items made from ‘halal’ meat are certified to be permissible for Muslims to eat. ‘Jhatka’ is another method of slaughtering an animal.
Mayor North said that restaurants and meat shops will have to “display clearly and visibly” whether they are serving halal or jhatka. According to the SDMC, appropriate action is likely to be taken against those found violating the rules.
