In a major boost to the Narendra Modi government’s idea of ‘One Nation, One Poll’, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law & Justice has endorsed it.

In its report tabled in the Parliament, the Committee has also advocated for one common electoral roll for the Lok Sabha, the state assemblies and the local body elections.

Counting the many benefits of the idea, the Committee has noted “Holding simultaneous elections will reduce the burden on exchequer, expenditure of political parties and ensure that human resources are utilised optimally.”

It further notes the idea “…will reduce voters’ apathy towards frequent elections and rather enthuse them, which will ultimately enhance participation in the electoral process.”

To make the idea of ‘One Nation, One Poll’ work, common electoral rolls are a necessity.

Earlier, the Election Commission of India has also batted for the idea.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been advocating for it for a long time.

Constitutional expert and former Lok Sabha secretary Subhash Kashyap believes this is the most important electoral reform needed today and must not be delayed any further.
