Mamata Banerjee’s challenger in Nandigram, Suvendhu Adhikari, Monday petitioned the Election Commission to cancel her nomination from Nandigram on the ground she did not furnish details about cases against her.
By the time he petitioned the Commission, her candidature was scrutinised and approved by the Commission official.
He requested the Commission to look into the matter on a priority basis.
Adhikari, a former minister in Mamata’s cabinet, resigned from the Trinamool Congress and the government a few months back.
He has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and is a candidate from Nandigram.
Adhikari petitioned the Commission that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not furnish the six cases pending against her.
The voting for the 294 seats of the West Bengal assembly is spread over eight phases, starting March 27. The counting of votes will start on May 2.
