Mayawati, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, announced Monday her party, Bahujan Samaj Party, will not ally with any party for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election next year.
She said, “I have a very bitter experience of the alliance in the past. So, I have decided to contest the next year assembly election in the state alone.”
The four-time former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh has seen her political fortune declining sharply in the state.
The term of the Uttar Pradesh assembly is coming to an end in March next year. With less than a year left for polls, political realignment has already started in the state.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, her party could not open its account in the state. In the next Lok Sabha polls in 2019, she allied with her arch-rival Samajwadi Party and won 11 seats.
“Our votes are transferable. So, the alliance partners are benefited but we don’t get their votes. So, there is no point in going for an alliance”, she said.
Of the 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the Bahujan Samaj Party won 206 seats in 2012. For the first time, the BSP formed a majority government. The party could only win 19 seats in the 2017 assembly election in the state.
She also announced that her party would not ally with any party for the forthcoming assembly polls in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.
