Guwahati: Filing of nominations for the second phase of Assam (same with West Bengal) legislative assembly polls covering 39 seats (out of 125 assembly constituencies) is coming to an end today where over 100 candidates have already submitted their nomination papers in their respective constituencies.
Polling will take place on 1 April where 30 assembly seats of West Bengal are readied for the electoral battles. Both the neighbouring States will go for the first phase polling on 27 March covering 47 Assam seats and 30 West Bengal assembly constituencies.
The third phase (last one for Assam) is scheduled for 6 April.
The process of filing nominations for this phase also begins today where 40 assembly constituencies in Assam and 31 seats in West Bengal will go to the polls. Counting of votes will take place on 2 May.
Meanwhile, the process of filing nomination papers for assembly polls in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry begins today. Both the States and UT have single-phase polling on 6 April, where 140 assembly constituencies in Kerala, 234 seats in Tamil Nadu and 30 in Puducherry will go for polling.
The last date to file nomination papers is fixed on 19 March and withdrawal on 22 March.
In another issue, the Election Commission of India, while responding to a memorandum of Trinamool Congress about the attack on WB CM Mamata Banerjee, termed the incident as unfortunate. It also added that the incident deserves to be inquired into with promptitude and dispatch after thoroughly rejecting the allegation that the ECI had taken over the law & order machinery over there in the name of conducting the polls.
