Maharashtra is seeing an alarming increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases. It registered 6112 new cases of the virus Friday.
Uttar Pradesh, a state with twice the population of Maharashtra, registered just about 100 new cases of the virus.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray warned the people of another lockdown if the cases don’t come down. The ruling Shiv Sena blamed the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party for rising cases in the state.
Taking the cue, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has implemented strict guidelines to check the spread of the virus. Shiv Sena controls the BMC. Mumbai reported 823 new cases of the virus for the first time in more than two months.
Kerala, ruled by the Left, and Maharashtra together contribute more than 70 percent of the COvid-19 cases in the country. The Union Ministry of Health expressed its concern over it.
When the union government is taking every possible step to resuming economic activity in the country, the threat of another lockdown in Maharashtra is worrisome.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is chairing a meeting with all the chief ministers in the country today to take stock of the economic activity. Senior ministers and officers of the union government will also take part in the meeting via video conferencing.
