Post the nationwide lockdown following COVID-19 outbreak, migrant workers had to go back to their respective state. Many experts doubted that the nation was getting into a phase of chaos as unemployed labourers might revolt. Nothing of such sort happened and instead the Central government had drafted policy that could benefit states that send migrant workers to other states. The state that benefitted the most is Yogi Adithyanath’s Uttar Pradesh.
To provide employment to migrant labourers who came back to their home state, central government had announced Gareeb Kalyan Rojgar Yojana. GKRA aims at providing employment to migrant workers for 125 days and the scheme kicked off on June 20, 2020. The central government had allocated 50,000 crore rupees for this scheme.
UP has spend 9359.43 crore rupees till now and has generated 10,58,17,358 person day under GKRA, hence securing the top position in terms of person-days generated. Yogi government has also bagged 8 awards for the programs launched under Jal Shakthi ministry and the government secured second position in the overall implementation of the Gandagi Mukt Bharat Scheme.
The scheme was initially rolled out for 6 states, i.e. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, but now the central government is mulling to cover all the states in this scheme. 12 Union ministries are providing support and employment to this project. So far, the government has spent Rs.39,292.81 crore and generated 50,78,68,671 person-hours in all six states.
