Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condemned the terror attacks in France. Three people have died in a knife attack at a church in Nice, in what French President Emmanuel Macron called an “Islamist terrorist attack”.
An Islamist terrorist armed with a knife attacked two women and a man at the Notre Dame Basilica in the southern city of Nice on Thursday morning. The terrorist was shot and detained by police.
“I strongly condemn the recent terrorist attacks in France, including today’s heinous attack in Nice inside a church. Our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the people of France. India stands with France in the fight against terrorism,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
French prime minister Jean Castex said that the country would raise its alert level to “emergency” in response to the attack, which comes during tensions over the re-publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad by the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.
Police sources earlier named the attacker as Brahim Aioussaoi. They said he had travelled by boat from Tunisia to the Italian island of Lampedusa in September. He was placed in coronavirus quarantine there before being released and told to leave Italy.
Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi spoke of “Islamo-fascism” and said the suspect had “repeated endlessly ‘Allahu Akbar'”.
