While Afghanistan and India polled 39 and 38 votes respectively, China could only muster 27 votes as the majority required was 28. The defeat is a telling reflection of the poor image of China at UN bodies after its handling of the Corona virus, Hong Kong pro-democracy demonstrations and the treatment of Uyghur Muslims.

India has won a seat at the prestigious Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), a subsidiary body of the UN, by defeating China and has become a member of Commission on Status of Women. While Afghanistan and India polled 39 and 38 votes respectively, China could only muster 27 votes. The defeat is a telling reflection of the poor image of China at UN bodies after its handling of the Corona virus, Hong Kong pro-democracy demonstrations and the treatment of Uyghur Muslims.
Tirumuri, PR of India to UN in New York, tweeted about the victory. “India wins seat in prestigious #ECOSOC body! India elected Member of Commission on Status of Women #CSW.
